5 Most Scenic Colorado Road Trips

With glistening snow-covered mountains, mesmerizing desert stretches, and riveting river canyons, Colorado is a feast for the eyes from nearly any lookout point. Many historic and scenic highways and byways crisscross the state, and with all of these breathtaking options, it can be hard to know where to start. Enjoy your ride and many wonderful gems of Colorado with these top road trips.

    1. San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway
This unforgettable 236-mile loop connects Ridgway in the north to Ouray and Silverton on the eastern edge of the loop. Durango is the southeastern point and connects westward to Dolores where it sweeps north up to Telluride and finally back to Ridgway. With ancient ruins, empty mining villages, and some of Colorado’s best national parks, this drive will require at least two days to fully enjoy.

    2. Trail Ridge Road
This 47-mile stretch of Rocky Mountain National Park spans the Continental Divide and is open from late May to mid-October. One of the highest paved roads in North America, Trail Ridge provides gorgeous mountain views and a close look at the diverse wildlife of the Rockies.

    3. Santa Fe Trail
For a history lesson as compelling as the sweeping landscape of the Colorado countryside, the 188 miles of the Santa Fe Trail is a great getaway. Leading from the John Martin Reservoir on Highway 50 down to Trinidad along Highway 350, this trail features a prairie steeped in wagon-wheeled and Native American history.

    4. Top of the Rockies
At most points on this ride, you’ll be above 9,000 feet enjoying the breathtaking views of the Rockies and the area’s unique wildlife. Starting in Aspen, this byway stretches for 115 miles past Mount Massive, Mount Elbert, Twin Lakes, historic Leadville (the highest incorporated city in the U.S.), and you can trail off to Mount Copper or find the trail’s northwestern end at Minturn.

    5. Guanella Pass Scenic Byway
If you’re in the beautiful range west of Denver, the Guanella Pass is a short but sweet jaunt. This 22-mile paved and gravel road connects Georgetown to Grant, traversing the Front Range which is rich in silver mines, alpine views, deep valleys and dramatic canyons.
